Pronunciation and General English Lessons
Would you like to learn to improve your level of spoken and written English? I teach English with an emphasis on pronunciation to individuals in my own home and elsewhere. I am particularly interested in and focussed on improving the pronunciation of my students as I believe that this is a difficult area of English and important, too. Learning English pronunciation helps give my students confidence when speaking and improves communication overall. I also encourage reading and give set readings to my students each week as I believe that this is crucial.
I have lots of experience of teaching English and can provide a specially made plan for your learning based on an initial assessment. I realise that many people who would like to improve their English and gain new skills and qualifications do not have the time to attend college and would like private lessons at a time that is convenient to them. If you live in London and would like affordable classes, this could be for you!
I offer well planned and fun classes with opportunities for practising and using skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. I am an English language teacher with over 25 years experience of teaching many different levels and abilities. I am highly qualified with an Honours Degree in Philosophy, (University College, London) a teaching degree (PGCE from the Institute of Education, London) a CELTA (International House) and my subject specialism is in ESOL. (GPRLS, SVUK). I hold both QTLS and QTS statuses for secondary schools and for further education colleges,
Here are two recent quotes from current students of mine:
“ Polly is a thorough teacher. She always goes further to deliver a high level of knowledge. Her classes are dynamic and flexible according to the student’s needs for improvement. I do recommend Polly's classes highly”
Ana Beatriz L. S. Jabbour, Assistant Professor, Sao Paulo State University, Brazil.'
"I’m glad that I have been working with Polly for almost 2 years. Her classes are the best ones I have had for decades. She offers a customised learning process, she is a perfectionist, and can empower and develop students’ potentials towards their maximum achievements. Her high-level teaching is ideal for academics that need to learn real British English and she has a desire to reach the most sophisticated levels of English grammar, pronunciation and of being immersed in British cultural aspects. She has been able to combine cutting-edge English knowledge and dynamic didactic strategies with a fully-supportive and friendly approach, moving students towards their professional and personal dreams with the necessary confidence. I do hope I will continue my Skype classes with Polly for many years to come. Additionally, I do recommend Polly’s classes to any student who would be looking for the best of British English."
(Charbel Jabbour, Brazil, Associate Professor Level III, UNESP – Sao Paulo State University)
I also teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and can help higher education students with dissertations or with specific language necessary for their study or professions. I have also been guiding new TEFL teachers through the CELTA exam and supporting them with areas of grammar.
I have worked as an English teacher in private language schools on the continent, on community projects in south London, in secondary schools and in further education colleges. A good knowledge of English in all its forms is very important for people's lives and I have a passion for helping students achieve their goals and improve their language skills. I have taught Cambridge ESOL Skills for Life exams for many years and have achieved a high pass rate in all four modes; Speaking and listening, Reading and Writing. I am also experienced in teaching towards Trinity exams which can be sat for as external candidates. I have a good understanding of the exam system in the UK and on the continent (CEFR) and can thus help you choose the correct exam route for you. I am knowledgeable of CAE, FCE and IELT’S exams. I am aware of the need to acquire certain English language exams and can help you to achieve them.
I can help students, every step of the way on their way to obtaining these qualifications. I am also an experienced Citizenship teacher and can aid students in learning about life and culture in the UK and studying for the UK's Citizenship test.
I teach all four skills ; reading, writing, speaking and listening but believe that speaking and pronunciation skills are of the most importance I am also adept at teaching towards individual exams and have a brilliant pass rate for different exams. I recently achieved 100% pass rate for a group of students sitting for a speaking and listening exam. I am good at researching the skills required for exams and planning lessons accordingly.
I also offer general English language classes and can cater to all abilities and levels although I am particularly interested in helping upper intermediate and advanced learners. I believe that it is very important to establish the strengths and weaknesses of the student in the initial lesson. Thereafter, I plan a course of learning for each student that we will follow throughout our lessons together. I note that some trainee teachers often need some help with their written work or applications, I have a large amount of experience in this area and may be able to help with this too.
I can also help with those who need to sit the B1 exams for spousal visa applications, assist with dissertations or with writing cover letters for job applications. I also teach citizenship for those wishing to naturalise in the UK.
In addition, I can offer a proofreading service for essays, CVs and dissertations too.
