About Nirwan O
Lets make learning easy!
I went on to interview and be accepted for Philosophy at Cambridge University. Interested in expanding my academic horizons, I then interviewed and was accepted to study the Psychological and Behavioural Sciences course. I subsequently did the same for Natural Sciences, before returning back to Philosophy! Having such a varied university experience was incredibly useful in developing my ability as a teacher, allowing me to understand what makes a good teacher from a student's perspective.
My time spent studying Natural Sciences and Psychology was extremely useful. I specialised in cognitive psychology and the science of learning and processing information, and I researched and developed a number of techniques for learning effectively. Applying these effective methods to myself, I managed to achieve a 1st in every subject I studied at Cambridge, coming top of the university in several modules in each subject, including the experimental psychology module in Natural Science.
Studying a number of subjects also allowed me to ascertain what made for effective learning in each specific subject, and what was effective in all subjects. For example, when revising for the experimental psychology module exam, I used the effective information processing techniques I had picked up to learn and remember 450 scientific studies for the exam. On the other hand, when revising for an exam in philosophy, rather than focussing on memorisation, I developed an approach focussed on a general fluency in the philosophical methodology which allowed me to confidently answer any question that arose. When studying for my statistics exams, I learned to blend these two types of learning styles together, incorporating memorisation techniques which bolstered a genuine understanding of the statistical techniques.
Studying such a variety of subjects was absolutely essential in realising what is useful when learning specific subjects, and what is useful when learning in general (I used the same principles to teach myself Spanish fluently within a year). This is why I have tutored GCSE Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, as well as A level Maths, Physics, and Philosophy. So far, all of my students have achieved (at least) the grades they wanted to achieve.
I have also tutored students for university admissions, including 4 students for Oxbridge who all received offers (Psychology, HSPS and Philosophy). Having gone through the Cambridge admission process 3 times for three different subjects, I believe that I am in a very good position to guide students in their university applications, whether they be for Oxbridge or not. Whilst other tutors base a lot of their advice off of anecdotes from their single interview experience, I can provide a more holistic and integrated overview of the interview process, explaining the differences in interviews between subjects (and interviewers), as well as the similarities between them. I think that this is what has allowed me to help every student who I have tutored for Oxbridge admissions to gain an offer.
Currently, I have been offered a place on the Teach First Leadership Development Programme and Post Graduate Diploma of Education, in preparation for Qualified Teacher Status and a Masters in Educational Leadership from UCL.
In preparation for this, I have undertaken the Teach First + UCL institute of education joint intensive 5 week course on general teaching pedagogy, which has taught me a lot about integrating exam success as well as developing understanding in the subjects. I have also taken an 8 week Subject Knowledge Enhancement course in Mathematics with the Department of Education.
