About Mari W
medical student keen to help others succeed - specialise in biology and medical school admissions amongst other things
I like to participate in extracurricular activities; I am currently the Surgical Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Foetal chair for UCL's Surgical Society where I am responsible for organising talks in the field. I am currently organising a talk with the lead surgeon of the first UK surgery in womb for babies with spina bifida. I am also a School Co-ordinator for UCL’s Sexpression society. Sexpression is a student-led independent charity that empowers young people to make decisions about sex and relationships through running informal and comprehensive SRE in the community. My main role is to coordinate with local schools to arrange sessions. I am also involved with teaching other medical students about SRE topics so that they are ready to teach the local school students. I am also volunteering for Education for Choice, a project that enables young people to make informed choices about pregnancy and abortion.
Outside of university I am a keen netballer, I have played from a young age and have represented my country in the U17 and U19 Welsh squads. I currently am the vice captain and play for UCL Medical School's 1st team. I like to focus on my personal fitness goals too by going to the local gym on a regular basis. Music is also one of my interests, I play the piano where I am currently practicing for my grade 8 examination and I also play the flute.
I have done a lot of casual tutoring work for family friends and medical students in younger years. I have also had a lot of experience teaching through Sexpression and Education for Choice, as I mentioned in my biography. As well as this, I have given sessions on how to go get into medical schools in a local secondary school back home. I believe that I am now ready to tutor professionally. I have a wealth of knowledge from my vast educational background and it would be a great privilege to share this with tutees and see them succeed. I have strong communication and social skills which will help in creating effective tutoring sessions. As well as this I personally like to set personal goals and I can use this skill to help tutees reach their objectives. I will undoubtedly be involved in medical education as a doctor therefore this experience would not only help my tutees, but my skills for the future too.
